NM Cannabis Testing Regulations
What and Why?
The Medical Cannabis Program in New Mexico was established in 2015 and with it came a relatively comprehensive set of quality control testing and approved testing methodologies. While you might not know it, each lot of flower, regardless of where in New Mexico it is cultivated, undergoes rigorous testing to ensure that all medicine is free of contaminants.
Bacteria, various molds, and fungi are all capable of contaminating cannabis during cultivation, harvest, and storage. Microbial contamination testing provides an indication of the level of cleanliness of a cultivation facility as well as an assurance of safety to the patient.
In addition to testing for quality assurance purposes, New Mexico regulation requires testing of cannabinoid content in each flower lot. Most patients want to know the amount of THC in their medicine in order to regulate their dosage. Some patients are interested in terpene content so that they can purchase medication that will help with their medical condition, so Urban Wellness specifically tests terpene content as well.
Testing ensures medicine is free of harmful materials and full of the good stuff, while also allowing patients to take control of the kind of medicine they consume.
