Life Cycle of Plants
Seedlings & Clones
The first stage of cannabis cultivation is referred to as the “immature” stage and generally lasts about two weeks. There are multiple ways to obtain an immature plant, such as sprouting from a seed or by cloning.
Cloning requires cuts to be taken from the mother plant, which is a plant kept purposely in a vegetative state. Once clipped, the clone is placed into the growing medium. Once the plant has developed healthy roots, the plant is moved to the next stage.
The Vegetative Stage
The vegetative cycle, or “veg,” typically lasts about 3-4 weeks. During this time, the clones are transplanted into larger hydroponic media where the plants will remain for the duration of their life. These plants receive light for 18 hours a day. By doing this, the plants are encouraged to grow tall and hearty in preparation for the flowering stage of their lifecycle.
The Flowering Stage
Known as the flowering cycle of the plant, this stage lasts around sixty days. During this stage, the plants begin a 12 hour on, 12 hour off light cycle. This encourages the plant to focus on flowering rather than bulking up its foundation. The plants begin setting bud sites, and it becomes easy to judge the canopy and get an idea of how much flower it will yield.
During the final week of flowering, the plants are “flushed,” meaning nutrients are no longer given to the plant. This eliminates any residue from appearing during harvest. Once the flowering stage is finished, the plants are ready for harvest and trimming!
